Setting Up GroupMe Notifications on an Android phone


To make sure GroupMe messages appear on your Android phone, follow these steps (you can skip the steps you have already completed):


Step 1 - Install and Set Up GroupMe

  1. Download and install the GroupMe app from the Google Play Store.
  2. Open GroupMe.
  3. Create an account or sign in.
  4. It is register using your cell phone number.
  5. Use the name by which fellow golfers know you.


Step 2 - Join the Tuesday Golf Group

  1. Click the Tuesday Golf Group invitation link that was sent by text message.
  2. If prompted, select Join Group.


Step 3 - Turn Off SMS Delivery

If GroupMe displays the message:

“Notifications are OFF because SMS message delivery is ON”

do the following:

  1. Open GroupMe.
  2. Tap your profile picture.
  3. Tap Settings.
  4. Locate Enable SMS delivery.
  5. Turn Enable SMS delivery to OFF.

Turning off SMS delivery allows GroupMe to send notifications through the app instead of as regular text messages.


Step 4 - Enable Notifications in GroupMe

  1. In GroupMe, tap your profile picture.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Tap Notifications and Sounds.
  4. Turn notifications ON.
  5. Make sure the Tuesday Golf Group is not muted.


Step 5 - Enable Notifications on the Android Phone

  1. Open the phone’s Settings app.
  2. Tap Apps (or Apps & Notifications, depending on the phone).
  3. Select GroupMe.
  4. Tap Notifications.
  5. Turn Allow Notifications ON.
  6. Make sure the following are enabled, if available:
  • Lock Screen notifications
  • Pop-up notifications
  • Sounds
  • Vibration


Step 6 - Check Battery Settings

Some Android phones restrict notifications to save battery power.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Apps → GroupMe.
  3. Tap Battery.
  4. Make sure GroupMe is not set to Restricted, Sleeping, or Deep Sleeping.
  5. If available, select Unrestricted or Optimized battery usage for GroupMe.


Step 7 - Check Do Not Disturb

If notifications are still not being received:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Notifications or Sound.
  3. Make sure Do Not Disturb is turned OFF or that GroupMe is allowed through.
