A guide to how group texts work
What is a group text?
A group text is a conversation involving three or more people. Once a group conversation exists, it has its own message history and its own participants. Some phone carriers limit text groups to a maximum of 20 people.
Can there be two groups with exactly the same people?
Yes, there can be many groups with the same people. If someone creates another conversation and selects the same people, that is a completely separate group. Messages sent to one group do not automatically appear in the other.
What is the most important rule to remember?
If you enter names or phone numbers—or select people's names—to start a new message, you are creating a NEW group. You are not joining or reconnecting to an existing group. To use an existing group, find that conversation in your Messages list, open it, and send your message there.
Can two different groups have the same name?
Yes, separate conversations can both have the same name and the same icon. They are still two completely separate groups.
Can any group member rename a group conversation?
Yes, generally any member of a group conversation can change the name and icon displayed for that conversation. The name is only a label; it does not identify a unique group.
Does renaming a group connect it to another group?
No. Renaming a group does not connect, merge, replace, or reconnect it to another group. It also does not transfer the message history from one group to another.
The group name is simply a label. Same name does NOT mean same group. If there are several conversations with the same people, look at the actual conversation and its message history to identify which one the group is using.
Can two groups be merged?
No. There is no “merge groups” function. If two groups exist, the practical solution is to choose one specific conversation and use only that one going forward.
Can someone delete a group for everyone?
No. There is no general “Delete This Group for Everyone” command. A person can remove a conversation from their own phone, but that does not remove it from anyone else's phones.
What does Leave This Conversation do?
This removes YOU from the group and leaves the conversations on your phone.
What if someone creates another group by mistake?
No problem—just don't use it. Identify the designated group, let everyone know which specific conversation to use, and stop posting in the duplicate.
Is there a simple way to think about all of this?
Think of a group text like a notebook. Imagine 12 people are sharing a notebook where they write messages to one another. Then someone takes a new, blank notebook and writes the same 12 names on the cover. It is a different notebook with different messages. Writing the same title on the new notebook doesn't connect it to the old one. Adding the same people doesn't transfer anything from the first notebook.
